What’s On?
Member Exhibition - The Northern Boys @ Stephenson's Gallery, York
Stephenson's Gallery in York is proud to present "The Northern Boys," a captivating exhibition featuring a distinguished collective of contemporary British painters: David Allen, Michael John Ashcroft, Andrew Farmer, Ian Layton, Norman Long, Adam Ralston, Chris Slater, Steven P Smith, and Haidee-Jo Summers.
United by their shared passion for plein air painting, these nine artists are at the forefront of this vibrant movement in Britain. Their work, primarily in oils and pastels, captures the essence of light, atmosphere, and the ever-changing character of both Northern landscapes and broader scenes from the UK and abroad. From bustling cityscapes and tranquil coastal views to intimate still life and evocative narratives, each artist brings a unique perspective and masterful technique to their observations of the world.
Visitors can expect to see a diverse range of styles, from the loose, expressive brushstrokes of Andrew Farmer and Adam Ralston, blending impressionism with realism, to the atmospheric cityscapes of Michael John Ashcroft and the light-infused landscapes of Ian Layton. David Allen is renowned for his ability to capture the quality of light, form, and colour, often in marine and coastal settings. Norman Long transforms everyday interactions into vivid narrative scenes, while Chris Slater excels at capturing transient moments of light and weather. Steven P Smith's work focuses on capturing the modern world around him, often from direct observation, alongside his passion for still life. Haidee-Jo Summers' paintings are a celebration of sea, wind, sky, light, and life, marked by fresh and vibrant brushwork.
The Northern Boys' offers a compelling journey through varied landscapes and moments, showcasing the rich talent and deep connection these artists share with the act of painting directly from life. This exhibition provides a unique opportunity to experience the breadth and depth of contemporary British plein air painting.

Do Not Assimilate - Exhibition by Nicole-Rose Munhawan
Garage Gallery Exhibition
DNA (Do Not Assimilate) is a contemporary exhibition exploring themes of cultural identity, belonging, and resistance against assimilation. Through textured realism and expressive mixed media, I reflect on the complexity of navigating diasporic identity, particularly as someone born in Zimbabwe and raised in the UK. The exhibition interrogates what it means to hold space in two worlds, to inherit a legacy, and to remain unaltered in the face of external pressure to conform.
Opening event:
18th October 6.30pm - 9.30pm
FREE TO ROAR MEMBERS
Open dates:
Monday 20th & Tuesday 21st - 10am - 3pm

MEMBER EVENT - RSMA Annual Exhibition
ROAR Member Chris Slater will be exhibiting at the RSMA Annual Exhibition at Mall Galleries, London from 17th - 27th September.
“The Royal Society of Marine Artists is the focal point for much of Britain's finest contemporary marine art, and many of the country's leading marine artists are elected Members of the Society.
This country is an island nation with a proud maritime heritage. The coastline of Britain and its principal islands measures some 19,400 miles, presenting a wide variety of often spectacular scenery.
The sea is part of who we are as a nation. It is this heritage and this environment that we aim to celebrate.
Whilst much of our work is representational in the broadest sense, our styles, choice of subject matter and painting medium vary enormously. Some of our Members specialise in thoroughly researched historical subjects, others capture the thrill of modern yacht racing; some enjoy muddy creeks and quiet harbours, others find beauty in super-tankers and cargo vessels; some find inspiration on the deep sea, others explore what's under the sea.
But no matter what we paint, or in what style, no matter whether we paint en plein-air or in the studio, the sea is always our main source of inspiration.”

Exhibition - As Fires Burn and Blackberries Arrive Too Early
Open:
Monday 1st September - 10am - 3pm
Monday 8th September - 10am - 3pm
Tuesday 8th September - 10am - 3pm
Over two weeks, participating members had a single day to respond to the theme of Eco Crisis — not by starting afresh, but by reacting to the traces left behind by the artist before them. No overlaps, no erasing, just a growing chain of responses: emotional, political, poetic, abstract.
The result is an unpredictable, layered exhibition of marks, ideas, and interventions, revealing how creativity can unfold slowly, collectively, and within limits.
