Free Starter Studios at ROAR
Studio space for artists taking their first steps
Applications are now open for ROAR’s Starter Wall Studios.
We’re offering a small number of free wall studios for complete beginner artists who are ready to develop their creative practice and take their first steps towards an artistic career.
This is an opportunity to have your own dedicated workspace, surrounded by a community of artists who want to see each other succeed.
Who is it for?
The Starter Studios are for complete beginners or people at the very early stages of developing their own artistic practice.
You don't need formal training, previous exhibitions or a professional portfolio. We're interested in your enthusiasm, commitment and potential.
These studios are not suitable for:
Professional or established artists
Anyone who already has their own studio
Anyone unable to commit to using the space at least three days a week
We particularly welcome applications from people who have traditionally faced barriers to accessing opportunities in the arts. We recognise that access to creative spaces and opportunities is not equal for everyone, and we want to help make these opportunities more accessible to people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
All applications will be considered fairly, with a focus on each applicant’s potential, commitment and how they would benefit from the opportunity.
What you'll get
Free wall studio space within ROAR
A dedicated area to make and develop your work
A shared creative environment with other Starter Studio artists
The opportunity to build a supportive community with the other successful applicants
Access to the wider ROAR artist community
1:1 mentoring and support, as available to all ROAR members
Opportunities to get involved in ROAR activities, exhibitions and events
About the space
These are wall studios within a shared space, rather than private, lockable studios. You'll have your own designated area to work from, while sharing the wider space with other artists.
Being part of the community is an important part of the opportunity. We want the successful applicants to get to know each other, share ideas and support one another as they develop their practices.
The commitment
The studios are free, but we ask that you use your space at least three days a week and make a genuine commitment to developing your practice.
We're looking for people who are ready to get involved, experiment, learn and make the most of the opportunity.
Application deadline: 30th November 2026
All applicants will be notified of the outcome the week commencing 14th December 2026.
Start date: 11th January 2027
